Morocco Toll Roads Guide: Autoroute Costs, Télépéage & How to Pay (2026)

Everything about Moroccan autoroutes: toll prices, how to pay with cash or Télépéage, which routes are tolled, and tips for rental car drivers.

Morocco’s motorway network (autoroutes) connects the main cities with fast, well-maintained roads. Unlike many European countries, tolls are still relatively low — but you need to know how to pay and what to expect. This guide covers toll prices, payment methods (cash and Télépéage), and practical tips for anyone renting a car in Morocco.

Which Roads Are Tolled?

Morocco’s toll motorways are operated by ADM (Autoroutes du Maroc). The main tolled axes are:

MotorwayRouteTolled?
A1Tangier – Rabat – CasablancaYes
A2Rabat – Meknes – FesYes
A3Casablanca – Settat (toward Marrakech)Yes
A4Rabat – Fes (alternative section)Yes
A7Casablanca – Marrakech – Agadir (Chichaoua)Yes

National roads (N1, N8, N9, etc.) are free. For example, Marrakech–Essaouira (N8) has no tolls. If you stick to N-roads you pay nothing, but journey times are longer and roads can be slower.

Typical Toll Costs (2026)

Tolls are charged per segment. Approximate total costs for common routes (dirhams, MAD):

RouteApprox. distanceApprox. toll (MAD)In EUR (approx.)
Tangier – Casablanca340 km90–110 MAD~9–11 €
Casablanca – Marrakech240 km70–85 MAD~7–8 €
Marrakech – Agadir260 km75–95 MAD~7–9 €
Rabat – Fes200 km55–70 MAD~5–7 €
Tangier – Rabat250 km60–75 MAD~6–7 €

Rough rule of thumb: about 0.25–0.35 MAD per kilometre on toll motorways. Prices are updated periodically; expect small variations.

How to Pay: Cash vs. Télépéage

Cash (manual lanes)

  • At each péage (toll plaza), choose a lane marked “Espèces” or “Cash” (or with a cash symbol).
  • Pay in Moroccan dirhams (MAD). Euros are sometimes accepted at some plazas but not guaranteed — have dirhams.
  • Keep small notes; change is given but large notes can slow things down at busy times.

Télépéage (electronic tag)

  • Télépéage is the Moroccan electronic toll system (like France’s télépéage).
  • Some car rental agencies offer a Télépéage tag (transponder) with the car — ask when you book or at pick-up.
  • If included, you use lanes marked “Télépéage” or “Libert-T” and drive through without stopping; the agency settles the tolls (often with a small daily fee or included in the rental).
  • If your rental doesn’t include it, use cash lanes — no need to buy your own tag for a short trip.

Practical Tips for Rental Car Drivers

  1. Have cash (MAD) for tolls if you’re not using Télépéage. Withdraw dirhams at the airport or use ATMs in cities.
  2. Ask the rental agency at pick-up: “Is there a Télépéage tag? Which lanes do I use?”
  3. First toll after the airport: If you pick up at Casablanca, Marrakech, or Tangier airport and join the motorway, you’ll hit a toll within a short distance — have 20–50 MAD ready.
  4. Rest areas: ADM motorways have rest stops with fuel, toilets, and sometimes cafes. Safe and convenient for long drives.

Do I Have to Use the Autoroute?

No. You can avoid tolls by using national roads (N-roads). The trade-off is longer drive times and sometimes more winding or busy sections. For a road trip mixing desert and mountains (e.g. Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Merzouga – Fes), long stretches are on free N-roads (e.g. N9, N10); you only pay tolls if you use the A7, A1, A2, etc. to reach or leave the cities.

Summary

  • Moroccan autoroutes (A1, A2, A3, A4, A7) are tolled; national roads are free.
  • Pay with cash (MAD) in “Espèces” lanes or use Télépéage if your rental includes it.
  • Budget about 0.25–0.35 MAD/km on toll motorways — e.g. Tangier–Casablanca ~100 MAD, Casablanca–Marrakech ~80 MAD.
